Tommy Doyle says he has returned to Wolves with a renewed sense of clarity and confidence, insisting he now feels “a lot better” within the club after a loan spell that helped reset both his mindset and his career trajectory.
The midfielder admitted that, before leaving on loan, he had reached a difficult point in his Wolves journey — something that felt at odds with the admiration he holds for the club.
“I think I’m at a stage now where my mind is a lot clearer. I feel a lot better, especially within this football club,” said Doyle.
“Before I went on loan it was probably a difficult place for me to be, which wasn’t nice because I have a lot of admiration for this football club. I feel like we’ve been through a lot, especially with me being here together.”
Despite that challenging period, Doyle insists he never wanted to walk away permanently.
“Initially I never wanted to leave, but sometimes you have to do what’s best for you and best for your career.”
“I had more experience last season in the Championship and I have one of the most appearances in the Championship in this team.”
With that experience comes a deeper understanding of the league’s demands. Doyle emphasised the importance of rotation, resilience and squad depth across a relentless 46‑game campaign.
“You might not start but there’ll be chances when you have a run in the team,” said the 24-year-old.
“There’ll be injuries, there’ll be boys where you just have to rotate it because of the nature of this league. I understand that it’s extremely difficult to go every three days. I think the teams with the best squads always do the best in this league.”
Doyle believes Wolves now possess that strength. He pointed to recent fixtures as evidence of the club’s growing depth and ability to change games from the bench.
“You can see from how strong our benches have been,” said the former Manchester City midfielder.
“You look at the Sheffield United game, the players that we can bring on — forgetting about myself — it’s impressive.”
“It’s really impressive and I think that’s how we can push on and really affect teams later on in the game when they tire,” he added.
“You get to bring on Raul, JJ (Jordan James), or if you flip it around to me. You could bring on anybody else in the team, you could name the whole XI.
“It really helps us and you have to have a good squad — and we have that.”
Doyle now feels fully aligned with the club’s direction and ready to compete for a major role this season, confident that both he and Wolves are equipped for the challenges ahead.
